Endocrinology Series: An Overview of Pituitary Hormones

The hypothalamus and the pituitary are connected in that the hypothalamus sends nerves direct to the posterior pituitary. Hypothalamic nerve cells secrete CRF (corticotrophin releasing factor) into blood vessels serving the anterior pituitary.

Which parts of the pituitary secrete which hormones into the blood system?

Anterior (all are made in the same shell of one subunit; especially FSH and LH)


Luteinizing hormone (LH)Growth Hormone (GH)Gonadotropic hormone (GNH)Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH)Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)

Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH)
